Description
A homeowner in Preston saw potential in a rundown 437.5 m² corner block with a deteriorating weatherboard house beyond renovation. The location was excellent: 9 kilometres north of Melbourne's CBD, close to Preston Market, local cafes, and with easy access to the Preston train station on the Mernda line. Preston's ongoing gentrification and multicultural character made it an attractive area to invest in a quality custom build. They wanted a contemporary family home from the ground up that would include a dedicated theatre room with proper acoustic isolation, open plan living connected to outdoor spaces, and quality finishes throughout. The brief was to create a home that felt calm and intentional, with technical performance built in from the start.
Gidaya Group approached this custom new build by designing for how the family would actually live. The layout centres on an open plan kitchen, living, and dining zone with large sliding doors connecting to a timber deck and landscaped outdoor space. We built a dedicated theatre room with room within a room construction for acoustic isolation, upgrading walls and ceiling with acoustic insulation and custom high density wall linings. The theatre features a full height black lined feature wall with slatted acoustic panels with felt backing, balanced by timber batten detailing. Infrastructure was roughed in for a 5.1.2 audio configuration and multiple OLED screens, with climate control engineered to manage heat loads. Throughout the home, we integrated Google smart home technology for lighting, climate, and security control. Quality materials were chosen for durability throughout.
The result is a purpose built family home with acoustic isolation, smart home functionality, and quality finishes that work quietly in the background.
